Last night I stayed up half the night trying to finish as much work as I possibly could, while the kids were sleeping. I'm a total night owl as it is, but I was beyond seeing double by the time I dragged myself away from the computer. I made my way to the bedroom, only to find Ryder, spread eagle over my side of the bed with his foot pressed against Nick's face. As uncomfortable as it looked, and believe me it looked UN-comfortable, I decided to leave them be and sleep on the couch....I had maybe 3 hours of sleep until I had to head to the airport to pick up my Dad. It was more like a nap than sleep really, and therefore felt that the couch was a very appropriate place for a nap. I woke up with baby and gave him a bath. I peeked in on Nick and Ryder, who were in different sleeping positions but looking just as uncomfortable, due to the laptop and books I noticed strewn all over the bed. I was late so I didn't move the debris. I did try to wake Nick up to tell him I was going to take the baby with me and I'd be right back. Didn't budge. So because I couldn't get my husband to a coherent state before I left, I had no idea what time he was heading to work. I also had a vague idea that he had plans to take some of the young men from our church ward to lunch today. I tried to call him all the way home from the airport. No answer. I'm not going to lie. I didn't just call. I called and I called and I called. I called so much I really, really dislike his "ringback" tone. I told my Dad I had to stop by the house to make sure Nick knew he had to get Haven ready for school. I walked into the house and could tell no one was awake yet. I got to the bedroom and Nick and Ryder were still out cold. I startled Nick by calling his name (only 10 million times, mind you). When he finally jolted up, disoriented and confused I caught site of large dark colored spots spreading across the entire front of his shirt. Startled by what appeared to be blood, I flipped the lights on and ran over to him. As my eyes adjusted to the bright light. I saw the source of the large stains. A BLACK SHARPIE MARKER!! He fell asleep on an open BLACK SHARPIE MARKER...and rolled over it, again, and again, and again...all night long. It bled through his shirt and stained his skin, the sheets, the bed, Ryder, the pillows...you name it. I was a little shocked to say the least, but as I sit here and think back on it...I can't help laughing out loud. Who the heck falls asleep on large permanent markers, books, laptops, small children? I better not stay up to late anymore.
